    بونوئل همچنین اظهار داشته ‌است که مریم باکره (با بازی ادیت اسکوب) یکی از معدود کاراکترهایی است که قادر به فرار از انتقاد اجتماعی/ مذهبی بونوئل به خاطر خلوص و آرامشش بوده است.
